Why in 2022 even bother to buy such thing and realize a need of sound deadening !! Ok, Im feeling you, but from 70 years ago this legendary truck almost not changed and is still in the same overall design, but under lots of chases and buy interests worldwide! still front of heaps of high tech comfy fancy cars and four wheelers in the market which they are so much cheaper than this box thing plus full of high tech options and comfort, but there is a reason for everything …
Landcruiser 78 got massive surface areas from front to the back, on the side walls and floor body and door cavities and obviously this grumpy motor could easy resonate all the noises through the entire body and while you driving, noise will drive you almost crazy! Toyota still keeping this vehicle simple and seems after 70 years of producing, this truck got lots of now days interstress, they didn’t bother to modernize the interior comfort at all and spend more money on it, they sell easy, why to do so, they serve the buyers purpose anyway, so mainly through the entire body you see bare metal and their provided vinyl floor even got little thicker layer of cotton underside to do something about the interior noise, but for sure not enough really.
The way to improve interior comfort (noise wise I mean ), is to use sound deadening sheets, its mainly a layer of strong adhesive plus thin Aluminum sheet on it to be able to stick it on the bare metals to stop metal to resonate the sounds vibration, you will be surprise how this little extra sheets on top of each area could keep the bare metal very silent !!!
There are couple of brands in the market which they provide good quality sound deadening sheets, I chose Dynamat and is easy to buy here in New Zealand plus good reputation world wide.
Dynamat provides different packages based on different sheet sizes and coverage area, their MEGA Pack containing nine sheets which is their biggest package, then Bulk package almost half of the Mega sheets coverage, then Trunk package and Door kit package, etc …
I searched heaps to see how much really I would need to fit the areas of my LC78, I wanted to fully cover the passenger area from front to just little after the front seats, also wanted to cover two rear wheel arches, all side walls inside cavities left and right and both rear tail gates plus two front doors,
(I didn’t want to cover the wagon space suddenly because is not needed for my design really, it will have foam floor then Aluminum checker plate fake floor to install all the cabinets and suddenly the wagon area after installing all the flooring and cabinetry will be truly silent enough and not necessary to do the sound deadening in the wagon area for my camper design),
So I decided to order their Mega package first to see if I need more or not, the Mega package almost finished every where which I wanted, except my front two doors and some small areas on the rear barn doors, so after using the mega pack, I ordered another package named Doors kit, containing 4 sheets of 305mmx915mm to finish off the job, so if you are in the hunt to know how much to buy then below is wat you need for the same coverage as mine on your Landcruiser, at the end of this post you will see a diagram showing each area needed how many sheets from these packages.
You need to prep the surfaces, first a good degreaser/cleaner to remove all the dirt then before applying the sheet, Spray the rubbing Alcohl and wipe the bare metal, it will help a lot to stick much stronger, also when you apply the pieces with a hair dryer little warm the pieces and then with a roller stick them permanently on each area, it will work fantastically rewarding, corners could be filled by the Aluminum tape too.
Also in below videos I compared before and after resonates trough the body of the Troopy, you will truly surprise how this sheets changing the noise moving through the metal !! and this will affect lots of noise hearings from bumpy roards when you drive the vehicle, now here we go a modern comfort feeling for this legendary classic Land cruiser 78, still same as 70 years ago simple, but with a calm and comfy drive, almost like a 2022 interior design !!
